So what's in a signature anyways?

Signatures are symbols that we use to represent ourselves. They can serve as proof of our identity and tend to denote intent when they are put to use. The idea of intent is key to understanding the social meaning behind signatures and the act of signing.

By signing a document, an intentional act, we are symbolically showing our concentration, understanding and committment to an item at hand. Two popular definitions of intent include:
"Firmly fixed or concentrated on something."

     and

"Unwavering from a course of action."
So, it is understandable that this age-old symbolic gesture brings with it, plenty of baggage when we talk of transferring the intent of the signatory into the digital world. For this reason, it is our goal to ensure that the intention of a signatory remains in-tact throughout any digital transaction that takes place. This becomes largely a matter of security and retention of control for the signatory.

It is paramount that we ensure that signatories remain in sole control of their own symbol, and that they retain the same ability to put it to use as they would with a pen. These ideas are central to any e-Petition system or online transaction that utilizes personal signatures. Signatures must remain in the control of their owner and the intent of the signatory must transparently and accurately pass through the system.
