A blog article about flaws in online petitions. I feel that the signmyname.org initiative addresses some of these issues:

And another good article that hints on the idea of "Mob Rule" and other concerns regarding e-Petitions.

Reply from the SOM Director of Elections..

A little while ago, I sent 2 questions to the Elections Director for the State of Michigan, Christopher Thomas:

1) Would the State of Michigan accept digitally signed petitions?
2) Has the State of Michigan investigated this to date?

Today I received a personal reply:

----------
"Greetings,

We would not accept machine printed petition signatures. It would take
legislation to enable this.

We have not investigated this.

Hope this is helpful.

Chris Thomas"
----------

So perhaps a place to start is to look at what some legislation would like to enable this?
